    Developing Project Managers’ Transversal Competences Using Building Information Modeling

    The emergence of building information modeling (BIM) methodology requires the training of professionals with both specific and transversal skills. In this paper, a project-based learning experience carried out in the context of a project management course at the University of Extremadura is analyzed. To that end, a questionnaire was designed and given to students who participated in the initiative. Results suggest that BIM can be considered a virtual learning environment, from which students value the competences developed. The emotional performance observed was quite flat. Similarly, students valued the usefulness of the initiative. Students expressed a desire for the methodological change of the university classes, and thought that BIM methodology could be useful for other courses. The results obtained show a line of work to be done to improve the training of students and university teaching

    Approaching In Vivo Models of Pneumococcus–Host Interaction: Insights into Surface Proteins, Capsule Production, and Extracellular Vesicles

    Infections caused by the Gram-positive bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae have become a major health problem worldwide because of their high morbidity and mortality rates, especially in developing countries. This microorganism colonizes the human upper respiratory tract and becomes pathogenic under certain circumstances, which are not well known. In the interaction with the host, bacterial surface structures and proteins play major roles. To gain knowledge into gradual changes and adaptive mechanisms that this pathogen undergoes from when it enters the host, we mimicked several in vivo situations representing interaction with epithelial and macrophage cells, as well as a condition of presence in blood. Then, we analyzed, in four pneumococcal strains, two major surface structures, the capsule and extracellular vesicles produced by the pneumococci, as well as surface proteins by proteomics, using the “shaving” approach, followed by LC-MS/MS. We found important differences in both surface ultrastructures and proteins among the culture conditions and strains used. Thus, this work provides insights into physiological adaptations of the pneumococcus when it interacts with the host, which may be useful for the design of strategies to combat infections caused by this pathogen

    CYB5R3 overexpression preserves skeletal muscle mitochondria and autophagic signaling in aged transgenic mice

    Cytochrome b5 reductase 3 (CYB5R3) overexpression activates respiratory metabolism and exerts prolongevity effects in transgenic mice, mimicking some of the salutary effects of calorie restriction. The aim of our study was to understand how CYB5R3 overexpression targets key pathways that modulate the rate of aging in skeletal muscle, a postmitotic tissue with a greater contribution to resting energy expenditure. Mitochondrial function, autophagy and mitophagy markers were evaluated in mouse hind limb skeletal muscles from young-adult (7 months old) and old (24 months old) males of wild-type and CYB5R3-overexpressing genotypes. Ultrastructure of subsarcolemmal and intermyofibrillar mitochondria was studied by electron microscopy in red gastrocnemius. CYB5R3, which was efficiently overexpressed and targeted to skeletal muscle mitochondria regardless of age, increased the abundance of complexes I, II, and IV in old mice and prevented the age-related decrease of complexes I, III, IV, and V and the mitofusin MFN-2. ATP was significantly decreased by aging, which was prevented by CYB5R3 overexpression. Coenzyme Q and the mitochondrial biogenesis markers TFAM and NRF-1 were also significantly diminished by aging, but CYB5R3 overexpression did not protect against these declines. Both aging and CYB5R3 overexpression upregulated SIRT3 and the mitochondrial fission markers FIS1 and DRP-1, although with different outcomes on mitochondrial ultrastructure: old wild-type mice exhibited mitochondrial fragmentation whereas CYB5R3 overexpression increased mitochondrial size in old transgenic mice concomitant with an improvement of autophagic recycling. Interventions aimed at stimulating CYB5R3 could represent a valuable strategy to counteract the deleterious effects of aging in skeletal muscle

    The force-velocity profile as determinant of spike and serve ball speed in top-level male volleyball players

    Understanding the relationship between mechanical variables derived from actions such as jumping, sprinting, or ballistic bench press throwing and sport-specific performance moves is of scientific and practical interest for strength and conditioning coaches for improving training programs. We examined the association between mechanical variables derived from the force-velocity (FV) profiles of the aforementioned actions and spike and serve ball speeds in elite volleyball players. Twenty-two male elite volleyball players (age: 24.3 ± 4.5 years; height: 1.89 ± 0.06 m; body mass: 86.3 ± 8.6 kg) were tested in two sessions. Squatting, sprinting, and bench press throwing FV profiles were determined in the first session, while spike and serve ball speeds were assessed in the second session. The theoretical maximal force (F0) of vertical jumping, the theoretical maximal velocity of sprinting, and the F0 of bench press throwing in ascending order, were strongly associated (rs range 0.53– 0.84; p<0.05) with spike and serve ball speeds. These mechanical variables explained 20%- 36% of the variability in spike and serve ball speeds, with a greater influence on the serve speed. These results suggest that assessing jumping, sprinting, and bench press throwing force-velocity profiles might help provide player-specific training programs and optimize performance in these technical-tactical actions in male elite volleyball players

    Extracellular Vesicles from Different Pneumococcal Serotypes Are Internalized by Macrophages and Induce Host Immune Responses

    Bacterial extracellular vesicles are membranous ultrastructures released from the cell surface. They play important roles in the interaction between the host and the bacteria. In this work, we show how extracellular vesicles produced by four different serotypes of the important human pathogen, Streptococcus pneumoniae, are internalized by murine J774A.1 macrophages via fusion with the membrane of the host cells. We also evaluated the capacity of pneumococcal extracellular vesicles to elicit an immune response by macrophages. Macrophages treated with the vesicles underwent a serotype-dependent transient loss of viability, which was further reverted. The vesicles induced the production of proinflammatory cytokines, which was higher for serotype 1 and serotype 8-derived vesicles. These results demonstrate the biological activity of extracellular vesicles of clinically important pneumococcal serotypes

    EFECTIVIDAD DE ESTRATEGIA EDUCATIVA SOBRE ANEMIA FERROPÉNICA PARA FAMILIARES DE NIÑOS MENORES DE 2 AÑOS

    La anemia por deficiencia de hierro es un problema de salud pública de trascendencia mundial. Se aplicó una estrategia educativa, a través de un estudio cuasiexperimental, en seis consultorios médicos de la Policlínica Jimmy Hirzel de Bayamo, de septiembre 2014 a febrero 2015, con el objetivo de intervenir con familiares de niños menores de dos años en la adquisición de conocimientos orientados a la prevención y control de la anemia. Se trabajó con una muestra de 33 casos. La estrategia concibió cinco actividades educativas sobre la lactancia materna y la dieta en la prevención de la anemia en el niño menor de dos años, la prevención del parasitismo intestinal, la utilidad de la suplementación y fortificación de alimentos. Se emplearon métodos teóricos, empíricos y estadísticos como el inductivo-deductivo, modelación, el método Delphi y la prueba de los signos. Se alcanzaron resultados significativos en la incorporación de conocimientos para reducir la anemia ferropénica, con mayor relevancia en el control del parasitismo intestinal y en las acciones dirigidas a la fortificación de alimentos (0&lt;8). La estrategia educativa resultó efectiva a partir de la validación obtenida por criterio de expertos y los resultados obtenidos con su introducción en la práctica comunitaria

    Maximizing Acceleration and Change of Direction in Sport: A Case Series to Illustrate How the Force-Velocity Profile Provides Additional Information to That Derived from Linear Sprint Time

    Sprint running and change of direction (COD) present similar mechanical demands, involving an acceleration phase in which athletes need to produce and apply substantial horizontal external force. Assessing the mechanical properties underpinning individual sprint acceleration might add relevant information about COD performance in addition to that obtained through sprint time alone. The present technical report uses a case series of three athletes with nearly identical 20 m sprint times but with different mechanical properties and COD performances. This makes it possible to illustrate, for the first time, a potential rationale for why the sprint force-velocity (FV) profile (i.e., theoretical maximal force (F0), velocity (V0), maximal power output (Pmax), ratio of effective horizontal component (RFpeak) and index of force application technique (DRF)) provides key information about COD performance (i.e., further to that derived from simple sprint time), which can be used to individualize training.     La educación universitaria en el contexto del Espacio Europeo de Educación Superior debe estar centrada en el estudiante. Se pretende en este nuevo paradigma, implementar un sistema de enseñanza-aprendizaje que propicie que los estudiantes desarrollen una serie de competencias tanto específicas (relacionadas directamente con su profesión), como transversales; es decir, aquellas competencias que estando relacionadas con la profesión también lo están con el ejercicio de una ciudadanía crítica y comprometida. Entre estas últimas está el desarrollo de competencias éticas y de cuidado del medio ambiente. En este trabajo se pretende analizar las acciones desarrolladas en la asignatura Plantas e Instalaciones Industriales del máster de Ingeniería Industrial para la promoción de la sostenibilidad y el cuidado por el medio ambiente. Para ello se describen las acciones en el seno del programa de la asignatura y se presenta la opinión de los estudiantes.In the context of Higher European Education System, teaching should be centered in student. In this new paradigm, the teaching-learning system should promote that students develop competences; as specific competences (directly connected with professional activity, as transversal ones (they are needed for professional activity and for a critical and committed citizenship). Ethical competences could be considered in the last group. The aim of this work is to analyze actions developed in the subject Industrial Plants and Installations (Master of Industrial Engineering) in order to promote sustainability and protection of the environment.     Semi‐quantification of binary saline solutions by Raman spectroscopy: Implications for Europa

    Producción CientíficaThe Europa lander is a concept for a potential future planetary exploration mission which purpose is to characterize the icy shell of Europa and to search for organics. To achieve this objective, the current concept of the lander includes a Raman spectrometer, such as RLS instrument, that could be able to analyze (sub) surface targets in their solid and liquid form. Knowing that ice and brines of Europa are potentially enriched by sulfate and chlorides, this work seeks to evaluate if Raman spectroscopy could be used to semi quantify the saline content of water solutions using space-like instrumentation. To do so, MgSO4 and MgCl2 were used to prepare three sets of water solutions. Raman analyses were then performed by the laboratory simulator of the ExoMars Raman Laser Spectrometer (RLS), which has been defined as the threshold system for the Europa Lander. After data analysis, two different semi-quantification approaches were tested, and their results compared. Although univariate calibration curves proved to successfully quantify the content of SO42− and Cl− anions dissolved in mono-analyte water solutions, this strategy provided very poor results when applied to binary saline mixtures. Overcoming this issue, the non-linearity prediction ability of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) in combination with bandfitting allows to successfully resolve the complexity of the vibrational perturbation suffered by the OH region, which is caused by the cross interaction of H2O molecules with different anions.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad, Grant/Award Number: PID2019-107442RBC31
